“Author’s Table” Introduces a Gritty Western Author shares story of love, loss, and longing

The Waccamaw Library is pleased to have Richard Lutman present his book, "Patch of Dirt," for the Author’s Table in the DeBordieu Auditorium on Sunday, October 23 at 2:30 p.m., at the Waccamaw Library, 41 St. Paul Place, Pawleys Island, SC.

"Patch of Dirt" is a Big Sky romance novel, set in the wilds of Montana. Attendees will enjoy a small reception, along with readings from the novel and a book signing. Based on the author’s first-hand, youthful labors on a “Big Sky Country” ranch, this fictional account features scenes both detailed and believable. “The backdrops of the beautiful, desolate landscapes of a cold backwoods American West,” the Red City Review noted recently, “successfully infuse the narrative with a brooding, brutal, and melancholy atmosphere.”

The plot centers on Joe Oliver, a thirty-year-old drifter who becomes involved in a complicated triangle devised by an older husband with a younger wife. “Readers anticipating a one-dimensional or shallow Western,” indicated D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review, “will find Patch of Dirt something far more complex, showing how three very different people share their lives, come together, and depart. It’s a powerful story that transcends the usual limits and perceptions of the Western romance, and will delight and surprise readers who seek something more than light action or casual romantic interplays.”

In addition to working on a rural Montana ranch, author Richard Lutman has also been a TV news photographer, a filmmaker, and a cab driver in the urban badlands and concrete canyons of Manhattan, New York. He has, apart from Patch of Dirt, published over two dozen short stories, three chapbooks, two novellas, and one nonfiction book.

The book signing will be followed at 3:30pm by the film "Lonely Are The Brave" starring Kirk Douglas.
