January 9, 2017

Three Web Sites That Are Musts for Writers:

Duotrope (www.duotrope.com):
For 50.00 a year it is worth far more than that.  Thousands of markets for flash fiction (under 1,000 wds.), short stories (1,000-7500 wds.), novels (from 40k and up), novelettes (7,500-15,000), novellas (15,000-40,000 wds.), story collections, and novel excerpts. Plus weekly updates. Word lengths are indicated.

With the search feature you can find the genre, style and length that fits your manuscript.

Poets&Writers (pw.org):
Free database of literary magazines, literary agents and small presses.

NewPages (www.NewPages.com):
Some of the resources here are: Literary magazines, independent bookstores by state, author links and much more. Free.

Formatting Guidelines:

The following is the standard guideline for fiction submissions (there are exceptions particularly with ebooks)

How important is formatting?  I was at a conference where Michael Curtis of the Atlantic Monthly was the keynote speaker.  What he said about formatting I’ve never forgotten:  If a manuscript comes in out of format it won’t be looked at because the next one will correctly formatted.
